How the koutala took shape and took off!!!
The koutala (wooden spoon) was born in Chicago and by a woman, Christina S., who wanted to start a Greek magazine for women. Think 'Cosmo' for Greek women. This magazine would have beauty tips, coupons, interviews, articles and agora (think shopping). One of the articles was a 'Dear Abby' or 'Anne Landers' type column who by the way the latter women started her advice column in Chicago too. The name of this Greek magazine was called 'Mia' (one woman).
While turning the pages in this magazine was an article labeled 'Yiayia Koutala', along with the text was an illustration of a wooden spoon. Upon looking at this, the words 'Tha fas ksilo' (you are going to eat wood) popped into my mind and just like that the idea was born. The idea was to engrave on wooden spoons these phrases.
It started with three phrases, then more were added, and some in English which proved beneficially also. All the phrases are fun and make people laugh. As of today, 6/14/2026, a total of 35 spoons is available. We have Greek ones and English one that carry the original spirit.
We can also customize these spoons and personalize too. We can add names and special messages too.
